2003 Table Rock Lake Results
As is typical for our club, Table Rock was good for some of our club
members, but not so good for others. The weather was spring weather for
Missouri too, with wind, sun, and some severe Thunder-Boomers. Saturday
showed us a pretty nice day, with some pretty strong winds, estimated at 30+
mph. Saturday’s weigh in brought some nice fish to the stand. Donnie Eubanks
brought in her “personal best” largemouth which weighed 5.14 pounds. It
looked like it just may be the BB of the tournament, and possibly for the
year, until.…. yes…. until…… Scott Phelps brought up his fish.
When Donnie saw Scott’s fish, she proceeded to congratulate him, and before
Scott could weigh his fish, Donnie asked if she could take a picture. She
asked if Scott would hold the fish w – a - y out over the water to get it in
the sun for better illumination. Scott politely declined when he saw that
Donnie didn’t have a camera.
Scott’s fish weighed in at an impressive 6.80lbs, and snatched that BB award
from Donnie. It is undoubtedly a contender for Big Bass of the Year. But we
have 7 more tournaments for Scott to sweat through to get that prestigious
award. See Donnie…now you don’t have all of that worry ahead of you, Scott
is the one on the bubble. Don’t you feel better?
On Sunday morning the skies told us that we were in for some bad weather. As
with all Hawg Hawler tournaments the officers assessed the conditions, and
decided that there was not sufficient light for a safe takeoff, so the
tournament was delayed. After a 15 minute wait, that allowed the sun to come
up a bit, we had sufficient light, and there was no visible lightening, so
the boats were released at about 6:45am. By 8:15am 22 of our 27 boats were
back in the dock. The skies opened up and let loose with a major
thunderstorm. There was heavy rain, high winds and, the anglers worst
nightmare, vertical lightening. When the storm subsided, most anglers took
off for some more fishing. Many just pulled out, and went home.
By 11:50am all of the tournament boats were back in the dock except one.
Everyone had weighed in, but we waited for that last boat. We waited another
40 minutes, until the tournament was over at 12:30pm, and the boat never
showed. Apparently they had pulled out and went home, and forgot to turn in
their boat number. |
Whenever anyone pulls out early and leaves the lake, PLEASE leave your boat
number at the designated location. This can save a lot of time for a number
of people.
Sunday’s weather definitely affected the fishing. Saturday saw 18 fish
weighed in, but Sunday there were only 7, and 3 of those were brought in by
one boat.
The interesting story for Sunday was Neil Volkman’s Big Bass. Although only
3.45 lbs, it was big enough to take the Big Bass Sunday pot, but how many
people know that it was caught on a backlash cast. Yep, while Neil was
picking out the backlash, a fish hit his lure and he reeled the fish in on
top of the backlash. [Hawg Hawler says: I have tried that pattern on
numerous occasions…I’m good at the backlash part, but usually there is no
fish involved] Some people have all the luck.

From The President's Boat…
I want to thank everyone who braved the elements to fish Table Rock. Even
with the variety of weather we had Donnie and I had a good time, and enjoyed
seeing everyone again. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone
who was able to catch fish. Our next tournament will be Lake Of The Ozarks,
out of The Flame Resort We will have our BBQ on Saturday before the
tournament. We will try to have the food ready by 11:30 AM, this will give
everyone time to eat before take- off. We are looking forward to seeing
everyone at the lake. Thanks to the tournament directors, and to all the
officers, everyone did a great job.
