Ozarks “T”
Just a quick recap of the Ozarks “T” showed Bob Ray leading the
Angler of the Year race by 13 points over Dave Sona and Neil
Volkmann. Brian Walker, Dave McGarity and Rob Cook were all within
striking distance. Terry Stanek, Scott Hasty, Chuck Beach and Lori
Luzynski rounded out the top 10.
Congratulations to Jim Fanter and Bryan Walker on their win. More,
later in this news…
Banquet Recap
The 2004 Hawg Hawlers awards banquet was held on October 9th, at
the KC Hall in Washington, MO. It was attended by approximately
100 people, including 65 of our 2004 club members. The following
is a recap of what happened at the banquet.
After an introduction to the proceedings, and comments by club
president, Gary Eubanks, we took care of some club business. Teddy
Reim presented a review of the treasury transactions for the year,
and gave a report of the 2004 membership. Then Donnie Eubanks
reviewed the duties, and importance, of those functioning as out
volunteer Tournament Directors for 2004. All that were present
were asked to stand, and were given a round of applause.
Then it was time to eat. Spaunhorst Catering, as they have done in
years past, provided another great meal for all in attendance.
2004 Year in Review
Clearwater Lake in March brought out 44 boats, the 2nd highest
boat total EVER for the Hawg Hawlers. The BIGGEST BIG BASS ever
recorded in this club was brought in. Actually that all time
record was broken TWICE in the same tournament. Dave Sona’s 7.74lb
bass broke the all time club record of 7.40lbs. But Josh Zelnis
brought in a 7.97lb bass to take the Big Bass Honors. Other
notable fish included, Ed Fileccia’s 6.34 lb bass, and Rob Cook’s
5.97 lb bass. Then there was Ken McNeil’s (road) accident on the
way home from the lake. It was fortunate that no one was hurt, and
many thanks go out to Ed/Judy Fileccia, Charlie and Chuck Beach,
and other HHers who offered assistance.
April found Bull Shoals Lake back on the Hawg Hawler schedule. A
survey in 2003 indicated that a number of Hawg Hawlers wanted Bull
Shoals back on the schedule. The officers complied, and found that
only 18 boats signed-up for the “T”, the lowest boat total since
1998. A respectable total of 57 fish were caught by the
participants. April found another (road) accident. This time it
was Charlie and Chuck Beach. Again the Hawg Hawlers came to the
rescue. Ken Luzynski, Dave McGarity, Rob Cook, and Scott Hasty
helped Charlie & Chuck with their trip to the hospital, and their
truck and boat. Again, luck was on their side as no one was hurt.
Unfortunately this left Teddy the only officer at the tournament.
And, as always, there were other members there to help. Terry
Stanek, Bob Treadway and Pam Wakim helped with the weigh in
duties. This is just another example of Hawg Hawlers helping Hawg
Hawlers.
Late April is always Lake of the Ozarks, and one of our better
tournaments. 2004 was no exception. The Heaviest weight ever
recorded in a Hawg Hawler tournament was posted. Dave Sona and
Neil Volkmann brought in 33.82 lbs. WOW, what a bag of fish! There
was a BBQ that was put on by Terry Stanek, Bob Treadway, Lori
Luzynski, Gary & Donnie Eubanks, and others, that went over very
well. Honorable mention goes to Darla Ketcherside and Ed Knoll who
each caught a 5.15lb bass that didn’t win the Big Bass Awards.
The 2003 survey mentioned earlier also indicated that the members
wanted to visit Mark Twain Lake in 2004. Well, the membership
stayed away in droves. Again, only 18 boats attended, tying Mark
Twain with Bull Shoals for the least attended tournaments in 2004.
Not only that, but it only took 4 fish to win. Mark Twain is
close, and convenient to most members. It would be really nice if
it were a better fishery.
Stockton Lake was up for June of 2004. Most notable event of the
tournament was that the catfish were biting. Greg Heinz caught a
7.74lber, but Tom O’Connor took top catfish honors with his 12+
pounder. Bass-wise it only took TWO fish to win the “T”. Fishing
was really slow (at least for bass).
As always, Pomme De Terre Lake was on the plate for July. The club
scale, that we purchased in 1988, FINALLY gave out, and we had to
borrow a hand held scale from Neil Schultz for Sunday’s weigh in.
32 boats caught 47 fish, for another not-so-good catch ratio for
2004.
Truman Lake in August found the Hawg Hawlers with a new scale, but
the catch was down again. Only one of the 27 boats could break
into double figures at weigh in. The hospital visit this time was
due to Greg Heinz. It seems that his big toe got the worst of it’s
battle with a couch. The emergency room trip ended at 3am on
Sunday morning (take off was at 6am). Thanks to Dan Durbin for
providing the transportation to our member in need. BTW, it’s
healing nicely.
Barrett’s Resort, on Wappapello Lake, welcomed the Hawg Hawlers
back in September. A total of 282 fish were caught, breaking the
low fish count jinx that had plagued us for the last few months.
Terry Stanek won his 9th big bass award. This 3 time Angler of the
Year, and original member, has a commanding lead in that category.
As usual in the past few years, October found us on the Osage Arm
of Lake of the Ozarks again. Runaway II Resort was our host again
for the climax of 2004, and a surprise ending to the Angler of the
year competition. There were a few anglers in competition, but one
showed his stuff and overcame a 13 point deficit to win the title.
The Chili Supper was a lot of work for Donnie, Lori, Pam, Chris
Treadway, and many others, and was enjoyed by most club members.
After the weigh-in was over, and people were loading out to go
home, one of our teams approached the officers and made us aware
of a miscalculation. It seems that there was a mistake in the
addition on the tally sheet. The mistake gave this team an
additional pound on their final weight and put them in 4th place
for the tournament. The mistake was corrected on the final tally
sheet and points, and payouts were adjusted to the teams that will
move up one spot. Bill Mincemeyer and Jason Kennedy, who ended up
finishing in 6th place after the recalculation, truly represented
the character indicative in this club, and should be commended.
Thank you Bill and Jason, for being honest and forthcoming. The
Hawg Hawlers is truly fortunate to have members such as you.
All Tournament and Big Bass Winners were presented with individual
plaques, acknowledging their accomplishments.
2004 Miscellaneous
All in all it was a very good year for the club. New records were
set for the ALL TIME Big Bass, and Heaviest Stringer, and there
was a fierce battle for Angler of the Year, that went down to the
final fish. Although the final year end numbers have not been
tallied yet, early estimates indicate that the club gave away
approximately $15,000.00 in money and prizes at the tournaments,
and the banquet. That brings our total payout for the Hawg
Hawlers, since 1988, to over $120,000.00.
Angler of the Year:
As I mentioned the Angler of the Year race came down to the final
weigh-in, and literally the final fish. Two-time Angler of the
Year, Bob Ray, went into the final tournament with a 13 point lead
over Dave Sona and Neil Volkmann. But, as fate would have it, the
fish didn’t cooperate for Bob, and he saw his 13 point lead
dwindle and evaporate. Neil on the other hand, saw an opportunity
and went for the “gold”. Neil caught 6 fish for the tournament,
one of which was the Big Bass for Saturday, and with his partner,
Dave Sona, finished in second place, and edged Bob out of the
final Angler of the Year standings by a mere 3 points.
Congratulations to Neil Volkmann on his FIRST Angler of the Year
win. Bob Ray finished just behind Neil, and Dave Sona finished
third.
Neil was presented with the Angler of the Year – Traveling Trophy,
which he gets to keep until it is presented to the 2005 Angler of
the Year winner. Neil also received a 6’ 6” Med Heavy, G-Loomis
Worm Rod, and an 11”x14” plaque with a color representation of him
and a couple of his fish, to commemorate his accomplishment. Neil
was also presented with the custom embroidered “Angler of the
Year” jacket.
Neil acknowledged two people who provided the support he needed to
win this award. The first was his wife. Neil said that they made
some “deals”, and some agreements, that allowed him to fish enough
tournaments to win. Neil also thanked his partner, Dave Sona for
being a friend, a teacher, and great boat partner. Dave had a very
notable fish at our first tournament in 2004, at Clearwater.
Dave’s fish weighed in at 7.74 pounds, and was a one quarter pound
BIGGER than the LARGEST BASS ever weighed in at a Hawg Hawler
Tournament. Unfortunately, Dave’s fish didn’t get the recognition
it deserved, because Josh Zelnis weighed in one that was a just a
bit bigger. Neil felt that Dave’s fish needed some recognition, so
Neil presented Dave with a fish mount of Dave memorable catch. We
are truly honored to have a gentleman such as Neil Volkmann as our
2004 Angler of the Year. Congratulations Neil.
Big Bass of the Year
New member, Josh Zelnis, not only caught the Big Bass of the Year,
but also, broke the ALL-TIME record for BIGGEST Bass ever caught
in the Hawg Hawlers Bass Club. Gene Reim held this record for 10
years wit 7.40lb fish, until Josh Zelnis shattered his record, by
over a half of a pound. Josh caught his record fish on a deep
diving crankbait, it weighed 7.96 lbs.
For his achievement, Josh was presented with the club Big Bass of
the Year – Traveling Trophy, which he gets to keep until it is
presented to the 2005 Big Bass of the Year winner. Josh also
received a 6’ 6” Med Heavy, G-Loomis Worm Rod, and an 11”x14”
plaque with a color representation of him and his fish, to
commemorate his accomplishment. Congratulations Josh on a most
notable fish.
2005 Club Officers
There were a number of volunteers for officers this year. Teddy
Reim decided to take the helm for 2005, and the rest of the 2005
officers look like this….
Teddy Reim President
Ken Luzynski Vice President
Rob Cook Secretary
Lori Luzynski Treasurer
Dave McGarity Tournament Chairman
Charlie Beach Webmaster
Thanks to everyone else who volunteered. Congratulations and the
best of luck, to the 2005 officers of the Hawg Hawlers Bass Club.
Questions and Answers
The 2004 & 2005 officers fielded some questions regarding some of
the members’ issues. Subjects that were address, included, but
were not limited to, the lakes to be included on the 2005
Schedule, possible changes to the tournament fishing hours, and
possible changes to the Points assignments.
There was also a suggestion to put out a members survey. The
officers will compose the survey based on the comments and
suggestions made at the dinner, and make it available to all 2004
club members. The 2005 officers will then meet to tally the survey
results and report back to the club on their decisions.
Attendance Prize drawing
Chris, Teddy and others came up with $4,600.00 worth of prizes to
be given away at the dinner. By shopping for deals, and buying in
quantity, they got approximately 48% OFF the retail prices.
Everyone who attended, and fished 2 HH tournaments in 2004
received a prize. Once everyone had a prize, all names went back
into the “hat” and we drew names to see who would get the
remaining prizes. The average retail value of the prizes was over
$60.00. The 1st grand prize was a Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris
Baitcasting Reel valued at $150.00. This prize was DONATED by Bass
Pro Shops (www.BassProShops.com) (1-800-227-7776) in St. Charles.
The 2nd grand prize was a KwikDroP seat pedestal (www.KwikDroP.com)
(888-242-6158), that was DONATED by Welker-Young Machine Co. of
Wentzville, MO. Congratulations to all of the prize winners and a
heartfelt THANK YOU to the supporters of the Hawg Hawlers Bass
Club.
Raffle Drawing
The raffle this year was a FREE YEAR of BOAT ENTRIES for 2005.
Assuming the boat fees do not increase, the value of this prize is
$450.00 ($50.00 x 9 T’s). After a drum roll, one ticket was drawn,
and the winner was Donnie Eubanks. Congratulation Donnie, I guess
we’ll be seeing more of you in 2005.
A BIG THANK YOU
Tournaments, Chili Suppers, BBQ’s, Awards Banquets and even the
existence of the Hawg Hawlers Bass Club just don’t happen without
THREE very important things…Sponsors, Volunteers and Members. If
you take any one of those away, we have nothing. We obviously have
plenty of each. Our formula is working well. 155 members in 2005,
and even with a few trips to the hospital, it was a very eventful
and successful year. And now it is time to give thanks.
Our sponsors provided the prizes noted above and are highly
recommended as a source for all of your fishing, and other needs.
Our sponsors include…
Kwik-Drop Seat Pedestals BASS PRO SHOPS Encore Productions
BeachNetServices.com YHTI Web Service Provider Cactus Ridge Resort
G-Loomis Rods Pomme St. Park Marina Cedar Haven Resort (Pomme)
Our volunteer list consists of quite a number of people who fill
in where needed for set-up, fix-up and clean-up. Thanks to all of
our volunteers, because they are part of the corps of the Hawg
Hawlers Bass Club. But SPECIAL recognition goes to the following…
• Bob Treadway for all of his communication with the Department of
Conservation, Water Patrol, Corps of Engineers, and other
organizations to set up our tournaments, as well as co-chair of
various committees, and food-feasts.
• Rob Cook for taking the responsibilities for the points and
results sheets for most of 2004.
• The 2004 Officers for their time and organizational abilities to
make 2004 a great success.
• Committee chairpersons for 2004 (BBQ, Chili Supper, etc.)
• Everyone who helped out this year when a Hawg Hawler was in
need.
• Everyone else who is not mentioned here……..and should be (my
apologies).
Lastly, THANK YOU to all Hawg Hawler members and their families,
because without you, there is no club. You are the reason the Hawg
Hawlers Bass Club exists, and grows every year. The founders,
officers, volunteers, and club members would like to extend a Big
THANK YOU to each and every member of “OUR” club.
Have a great winter, and hope to see you all in 2005.
