Mark Twain Lake has returned!
After years of holding out on us, hitting the club with high water, low water, fog, stumps, a plain lack of fish, and this year HOT Saturday temps and a light show of a thunderstorm before Sundays delayed take off, Mark Twain was back in “fine” form. I want to thank members for waiting with us on the lot Sunday while the storm passed. We may have missed 30 minutes of fishing but that’s better than missing a club member for much longer.
Our Hawg Hawlers must have had the inside scoop on good fishing with a 27 team crowd on hand the field was larger that expected based on last years record low of 18 boats. Reports from Friday’s prefishing were all good with plenty of limits expected for the rest of the weekend.

The Shands Champs Repeat and make the TOP 10 heaviest Stringer List and another points bonanza with 25.79 lbs !!
Greg and Son Andy Shands must have liked the top spot they took at Pomme and decided to finish first again. It’s nice when you can do that at will. They haven’t stopped taking checks since the second tourney this year. When you catch 13 fish (A double Limit for Greg) you know you will be taking a check home at Mark Twain. Keep the streak alive guys. By the way, their 13 fish is 1 more than the entire club caught there in 2001 & 2002 combined. They were throwing Brush Hogs again. You think we’d catch on. It goes to show that there is more to it than just knowing what to throw. They took home $290 for their catch.

Also a special note here.
On being awarded their 1st place honor and well deserved round of applause at the tournaments end, Mr. Shands made a point to stop and let members know that 2 of his competitors, Bob Ray and Ken Luzynski, helped replenish his dwindling stock of the very bait he would win with. He thanked them and with that WE THANK YOU GREG, BOB, and KEN for showing again what this club is all about and another way we stand apart as a club.

Second Place goes to another Father Son duo that you can usually find cashing Hawg Hawlers checks. Jim Sr. and son Jim Fanter came in with 9 fish on Saturday to take a substantial lead. That’s pretty hard to take when you have no fish like I did. How’d they do it? Topwater was their pattern. They followed up with another 2 fish Sunday and a highly respectable total on any lake of 22.84 lbs . They’ll cash yet another check, this time its $210 for the effort. Great work guys.

Rounding out our top three was the team of Don Beckley and Cindy Berra. New members this year they haven’t missed a tourney this season. With 3 fish on the first day, they had their work cut out for them. Despite the high temps on Saturday and the passing storm on Sunday they indeed worked it out with a second day surge. 7 fish for a total weight of 21.54 That got them $130 to help pay for the weekend. Great comeback from a great team. The club is glad to have you this year.

The other paid placing positions were as follows: 4th Chuck Elders and Bob Ray (19.78 lbs) $92, 5th Dave McGarity and John Luzynski (13.06 lbs) $68, 6th Mike and Brian Jankowski (12.48 lbs) $58, 7th Joe and Jayne Wolf (12.29 lbs) $50.

BIG BASS
Saturday and for the Weekend was Steve Carnal with a nice 5.08 lb’r that was good for $104 and a Side pot of $135. Nice work.

Sunday’s big bass was caught by returning member Jim Coyner at 3.34 lbs. Another $104 payout. The check is in the mail. Great to see you back Jim.

Congrats to all on 109 fish total! The race for Angler of the Year is staying interesting. Every fish…..every point counts, just ask last years champ Neil Volkmann.

Next Tournament:
Truman Lake. We’re out of Sterett Creek this time. Saturday July 9th 6am to Noon and Sunday July 10th 6am to noon. Hope to see you all there.

Giveaways: $$$
This month we gave away a free nights stay for two (A $52 value) at the Junction Inn which went to Warren Lichius. The free weekend for two at Runaway II went to Andy Shands, things are really going their way. Jones Tackle Service again gave away a free reel cleaning which went to Cindy Berra. All of that was in addition to our regular lures and free tourney certificates.

Special Thanks:

The folks at the Junction Inn. Also a special thanks to the Tourney Directors at Twain. Its one of the tougher lakes to check live wells etc. Thanks Dave/John and Warren/Doug. And thanks to all members for their patients on Sunday morning. Pam Wakim and Greg Heinz for taking photos.

New and Returning Members:
Jim Coyner, Nikki Dell, Tim Gerner, Karen Kennedy, Keith Ostrander, Jayne Wolf.

Fun Stuff:
For anybody throwing a bright colored crank bait off a windy point you probably got to experience the thrill of fighting a Drum or White Bass. Even the occasional Walleye was up and about this weekend.
Fishing Tips from the Unknown. Word has it that a rogue fisherman sent a tip to Carolina rig a Senko??? to a couple of Hawg Hawler teams. One team followed the advice....Congrats Don and Cindy on 3rd place. Another team didn’t…..that team might have been our treasurer and partner Mike. You just never know if a tip is good.
A diverse weather weekend with Hot temps and clear skies to sunburn members (Kenny put on the sun block man) to a lightening show and tornado warnings, we had it all. Those camping out got to experience it all a little closer. Cannonball in the Junction Inn pool, how far did that splash go?
Lastly, on arriving at the Junction Saturday morning, I spoke with Mr. Shands who thought the fishing was good enough that a club record might fall that weekend. Well Greg, you were right! And it was your team weight that set that record. It is of course also the heavy stringer for the 2005 season so far. (Thanks for bumping Me and Cookie out) Let see if it can hold up for the year.
