Another great tourney at
Pomme De Terre. 48 Anglers weighed in 122 fish. The weather was a little
better to us on Saturday. Sunday was a little rough with thunderstorms all
night. It cleared up early and turned out to be a pretty nice day.
Winning Anglers
1st Place -- John Ward and Mark Boyette
John weighed in four fish on Saturday. Their team weight for Saturday was
5.68 lbs. This weight put them in 8th place after weighin Saturday. Sunday
was a different story. Both John and Mark weighed in their 5 fish limit.
John weighed in one that was 2.65 lbs. Their total Sunday weight 19.25 lbs.
I believe this is very close to a one day stringer record. Their total
tourney weight was 24.93 lbs. That Tourney weight put them in 11th place in
the overall top 11 stringers. (this just beats out the ex Secretary and ex
President who held the 11th place spot with 24.16lbs) They took home $212.00
for the first place win. John and Mark reported they caught the 10 fish on
Brush Hogs and 7” worms 10’ deep. John reported that they caught 75% of
their fish in a spot of about 30’ of shoreline. They had their double limit
on Sunday by 9:45 AM.
2nd Place -- Steve Williams and Brian Schumacher
Steve and Brian set the pace on Saturday. Steve weighed in 4 fish and Brian
weighed in 1. The team weight for Saturday of 11.52 lbs put them in 1st
place. One of Steve’s fish was a Hawg. It weighed in at 5.02 lbs. Sunday it
was just the opposite. Brian weighed in 5 fish and Steve weighed in 1. The
result was a total weight of 21.41 lbs. Steve and Brian took home $170.00
for their effort. They reported using spinnerbaits.
3rd Place -- Joe Voss and Del Williams
Joe weighed in 4 fish and Del weighed in 2 fish on Saturday for a total
weight of 10.64 lbs. That put them in 2nd place on Saturday. The fish eluded
Joe on Sunday and Del weighed in 1 fish on Sunday. Their total team weight
was 12.05 lbs. They took home checks for $138.00 for their effort. Joe and
Del reported they used Crankbaits, Worms and Lizards
48
anglers caught a total of 122 fish.

Big Bass
Saturday
Saturday Big Bass was weighed in by Steve Williams at 5.02 lbs. Steve took
home $90.00 for Saturday Big Bass and his fish also entitled him to the Big
Bass Side Pot worth $120.00. Steve reported he caught the Hawg on a white
spinnerbait
Sunday
Sunday Big Bass was weighed in by John Litzinger at 3.46 lbs. John took home
$90.00 for the Sunday Big Bass. John reported he caught the Hawg on a Baby
Brush Hog
Angler of the Year
Terry Stanek is still in sole possession of the top spot as Angler of the
Year by 9 points. Terry weighed in one fish at Pomme. Second place is held
by Jeff Schwent. Jeff weighed in 4 fish at Pomme. Bob Treadway weighed in 2
fish at Pomme. Bob and Pam Wakim finished in 6th place to add a place point.
That was enough to keep Bob in sole possession of 3rd place.
A Lesson was learned
Competition can be very healthy. Our club was born from the need for
competition. It appears that there was a bit more competition this past
weekend amongst some of the participants at
Pomme.
I heard things like “young whippersnappers” and “old farts” being whispered
around the weighins. This was a typical battle between the “Baby Boomers”
and the “Generation Xers”. It was as if Guido Hibdon and Denny Brauer had
teamed up to teach Dion Hibdon and Chad Brauer a lesson they would never
forget. Steve (Guido) Carnal and Rick (Denny) Armstrong stepped to the
scales on Saturday with 3 fish. One of Guidos was big, 3.92 lbs. Their total
weight for Saturday was 6.73 lbs. Adam (Dion) Carnal and Ricky (Chad)
Armstrong could only watch. They were skunked on Saturday. They knew they
had their work cut out for them if they were going to “walk the walk”. It
was clear to all that they could “talk the talk”. Sunday was a little
different story. Guido (Steve) and Denny (Rick) weighed in one fish each for
3.53 lbs. Their total weight for the weekend was 10.26 lbs. Dion (Adam)
brought in 2 fish and Chad (Ricky) brought in one. Their total weight was
5.10 lbs. They out fished the “Old Farts” on Sunday but it wasn’t enough. I
think the message was clear. You don’t mess with the big dogs. Anyone for a
rematch?

Mark Twain History
Jun, 2001 28 boats 4 fish total for the tournament (winning weight 2 fish =
7.38lbs).
Oct, 2002 32 boats 8 fish total for the tournament (winning weight 1 fish =
3.45lbs).
May, 2004 18 boats 23 fish total for the tournament (winning weight 4 fish =
7.57lbs).
June, 2005 27 boats 109 fish total for the tournament (winning weight 13
fish = 25.79lbs)
Mark Twain had not been very good to Hawg Hawlers in the past. That all
changed in 2005. Other than a delay on Sunday for storms, the tourney was a
great success. We had 27 boats sign up for the tournament. Out of those 27
boats, 23 weighed in fish. They weighed in 109 fish. 40 of the 54 anglers in
the tournament weighed in fish. The first place winners were Greg and Andy
Shands. They weighed in 13 fish (including a full 5 fish limit for Greg both
days) that weighed 25.79 lbs.

us fill these last two spots. We have received a number of requests for
Teams to serve as TD’s more than once. Unfortunately, we cannot award more
than one TD spot to the same Team until after June 1. We have started a
waiting list for Tournament Director spots. This list will be used to fill
any outstanding or new openings for Tournament Director. Please contact
Terry Stanek or Craig Gravatte, Tournament Co-Chairman to put your name on
the list.
New Members
We now have 154 members. Welcome back to the returning 2005 members. The
following is a list of club members who were not members in 2005. Please
give them a warm welcome.
Adam Carnal, Paul French, Paul Ketterer, Scott Mertz and Kenneth Rose
Club Business
Due to personal reasons Bob Treadway, Tournament Co-Chairman has resigned
his position as a Hawg Hawler Officer. Effective 5/4/2006, Craig Gravatte
has agreed to help us out and fill the position vacated by Bob. Please join
us in congratulating him on the appointment. He will definitely be an asset
to the Hawg Hawlers Officer Team.

The Presidents Boat
The Pomme De Terre State Park Marina is under new ownership this year, but
the operating standards have not changed. Ray and the “New Crew” seem to be
carrying on the tradition of running a first class operation. Many Hawg
Hawlers reported that their food was top notch from the biscuits and gravy
at breakfast through those massive tenderloins for lunch. The entire staff
was very friendly and accommodating. One of our members didn’t bring an
extension cord to charge his batteries, and the marina lent him one at no
cost. On top of all of this, they also provided us with a free nights slip
rental as one of our attendance prizes. The “New Crew” at the State Park
Marina is doing a fine job, so they deserve a big “Hawg Hawler Thank You”.
They will remain on our “Favorite Marinas” (add link http://www.hawghawlers.com/mrr.htm)
listing. If anyone has an opportunity to travel to Pomme De Terre Lake,
please stop in and say “Hi”, tell them you are a Hawg Hawler, and then order
a tenderloin.

Confessions of a Female Angler
By Lori Luzynski and Pam Wakim
This quandary has puzzled female anglers for years.
It’s March. It’s cold. We’re out in our boats trying to catch fish when
suddenly it happens. We have to go potty. Is anyone watching? What do we do?
The light bulb goes on. Ah ha, the livewell …. do we dare? We thought our
partner would have a stroke. “Not in this boat and not in that livewell!”
Drats, foiled again!!!
It’s spring and warmer. We’re back on the lake. Houses dot the shoreline ….
people watching. What to do? We remember the cut in that bluff with an old
abandoned boat dock. Wasting valuable fishing time we make the run and
slowly troll into position. Ah, relief …. Oops … it’s not abandoned?? Sorry
buddy … didn’t see you fishing there.
It’s summer and club studs are breaking out their Hawg Hawler thongs. We get
a tip to keep a bucket in the boat for emergencies. Good idea but since we
got the bucket .… we haven’t had to use it. It was taking up space so we
left it at home this trip. Now we realize it’s true …. we never really
appreciate what we have until it’s gone.
It’s fall and we’ve learned not to drink anything during a tournament no
matter how thirsty we get. At days end we’re still ready to burst and
bouncing across that chop on the way back is agony but we made it. You know,
the thought of using Depends gets more tempting every year. How old do we
have to be to buy those things?
Don’t touch that dial. Stay tuned for further confessions …..
